Ross-Shire Journal Friday 26th May 1922
The memory of the men who went to War from the Ardross Estate and who never returned has been fittingly and appropriately commemorated in the beautiful church at Ardross by the placing of a handsome and ornate tablet, which was unveiled by General Sir Walter C Ross of Cromarty, KBE, CB.

L/Cpl George Munro, 2nd Seaforth
L/Cpl Hugh Ross, 4th Seaforth
L/Cpl James Beale, 4th Seaforth
Pte Alex R M Stevenson, 5th Gordons
Pte Colin Bain, 4th Seaforth
Pte David C MacDonald, 5th Seaforth
Pte Don Henderson, 5th Seaforth
Pte Donald McGhee, 5th Gordons

Pte Thomas J Fergurson, 5th Seaforth

As far as I can see these five are not.

Seaman John MacKay, RNR
I can find no record of anyone with this name in SNWM or CWGC:

Thanks

Thanks ADP. I'd tried McKeller but not McKellar. That may well be him. The 4th and 5th Seaforths were in the same brigade in 51st Highland Division and I think there was quite a lot of movement between them.
Thanks

The local community are trying to research the names on this memorial, here's the ones that are giving them bother, maybe they should look here!
We are still using the memorial itself as our starting point but are becoming aware of some discrepancies in spelling and numbering. So far we have no information at all on seaman John MacKay, Royal Naval Reserve; Private Roderick Matheson of the 2nd Battallion Seaforth Highlanders or Private Colin MacKellar of the 4th Battallion Seaforth Highlanders. |

Knockbain is in Easter Ross, like Ardross but not near enough to be an indication that 3/7611 is the Rod Matheson on the memorial. The Elgin born man may be in the Moray Roll of Honour.

June Munro has kindly let me know that there will be an exhibition in Ardross Hall in early August to coincide with the First World War centenary, to commemorate the men on the memorial in Ardross Church. It will contain photographs, medals, uniforms and other material.
It will run on August 2nd from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday 3rd 10am to 3.30pm when it will close with a Drumhead Service conducted by the Rev.Rob Jones.
Ardross Pipe Band will play at intervals throughout the weekend.
Thanks

This is now WMR report 75898.
There is a photo & transcript of the memorial here (note that the memorial gives service numbers as well which should assist research).
For ease of use this names list is copied below
http://www.rossandcromartyheritage.org/communit/p37/ht/rs/war%20memorials/War_memorials/ardross_wm/a03_wm02.html
Note also that the newspaper report states there are 27 names, but only lists 25 names, and there are only actually 24!!
