Named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian as:
S.LT. CHAS.F.A.CHALLIS. R.N.R. ROYAL NAVY
Charles Frederick Aquila Challis – age 24 – Sub-lieutenant, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Navy.
Charles joined the merchant navy in July 1909. He was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in March 1915 but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and discharged in August. His commission was re-instated in March 1917 but he died of TB at the family home of Waterloo House in Haddington.
Born 1893 in Wynberg, Cape Colony, South Africa. Son of the late Elizabeth (Benns) Challis (died 1895) and of James Challis of Waterloo House, Poldrate, Haddington, and step-son of Mary Ann (Adams) Challiis who married James in 1897 in Leeds.
Died on 7 March 1917 and buried in Portobello Cemetery, Midlothian. _________________ Ken |
