L. Cpl William Axon.
William Charles Axon – age 25 – Lance Corporal (10110) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was educated at the Ewart High School in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire and was a chauffeur when he enlisted in March 1910. The 1st RSF were at Gosport in Hampshire and William landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914, one of the first British formations to move to France as part of the original British Expeditionary Force and one of the first into action. William was buried in a battlefield grave and re-interred at Laventie in November 1919.
Born 1890 in Ambala India. Son of John and Eliza (McInerny) Axon of 1 Windsor Terrace, Newton Stewart and of 74 Slateford Road, Edinburgh. John was the Colour Sergeant/ Instructor with the Galloway Rifle Volunteers.
Killed in Action on 27 October 1914 and buried in Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France.
